Looking for Clarity – the tax and budget primer released by OpenSky in June – prompted a discussion in Nebraska about the need for comprehensive tax reform. Newspapers across the state quickly echoed the need for this conversation which affects us all, from city business owners to rural ranchers.
The Scottsbluff Star Herald, in an editorial published July 13th, urged citizens to learn more about their state’s budget, saying that fixing Nebraska’s tax system, which hasn’t had a comprehensive reform since 1967, “will require more than a bumper-sticker understanding of how the system works.”
The editorial board wrote that “the OpenSky report is good reading for anyone who wants to be part of the solution.”
The Lincoln Journal Star editorial board also threw their support behind Looking for Clarity. In their July 23rd editorial, the Journal Star reminded readers that several times the board has supported a summit to discuss state taxes and related issues but the support of Nebraskans is vital to achieving this goal: “There’s little doubt that it will take a sizable groundswell of public support to persuade politicians to convene a tax summit.”
OpenSky will continue working to improve Nebraska’s budget and tax structure to keep Nebraska moving forward, but the Journal Star is right: we can’t do it on our own. Achieving real tax reform takes public support.
